You start a game of DnD with a blank character sheet. Your DM has them all. You only discover stats and things as they become relevant.
Like, “I rolled 7 on my constitution check” “You get a +2 bonus so that’s a 9.” *Hurriedly marking it down*
Or
“I would like to ask the innkeeper if there is anything weird going on in the area” “Dragonborn are rare in these parts, so she is suspicious at your approach.” “Wait I’m a DRAGONBORN?!?”
It would be absolute chaos but for a one-shot I feel it would be fun. Maybe all the characters have amnesia and they have to figure out what they can do from scratch.
I figure they’d start with the obvious stuff that they already know – like you can pretty easily look down at your hands and realise you have scales and are thus a dragon born, or move your tail and realize you’re a tiefling. Constitution though? Did you stab yourself to see how much health you have? Of course not, why would you?
Likewise you can check your inventory – okay, I have vestments and holy symbols, I’m probably a priest of some kind. But I won’t know if I’m a cleric or a paladin until I get into a situation where I have to figure out whose spells I know.
There would absolutely be that one guy in the party who’d check his health by stabbing himself though, and then you’d also get the opportunity to figure out who in the party knows healing spells
my boyfriend and I sometimes struggle to be on the same page when it comes to comforting- often i just want to vent and don’t need advice, whereas validation confuses him and he wants a plan of action
to counter this, we’ve come up with a system where we ask: “do you want advice, empathy, both or neither?”
if it’s just advice, i know to go straight to action points and not spend time on fluffy words
if it’s just empathy, he knows i want to be reassured and comforted and that’s all
if it’s both, it’s time for advice that recognises how hard the situation is and is perhaps gentler in nature
if it’s neither, just a hug is really good
i recommend trying to use this in your lives! it makes sure you’re giving and getting what you need, and reduces the risk of resentment or similar
